Writer's Block: Adult Onset

emo thursday

Putting legal definitions aside, at what age do you think someone can really be considered an adult?

View 502 Answers

Personally, I think the concept is bullshit. I don't think there is a point at which an individual becomes fully grown. It's a societal construct, and what matters is the maturity and experience of the individual, not an arbitrary age or a certain checklist of characteristics or achievements. A certain age simply cannot be regarded as a point at which all people have "grown up." There will always be entirely too many exceptions to that kind of rule. I have had friends who were younger than I am, who were far more mature, experienced, and intelligent than many "adults." Life and growing up aren't linear things. In some ways, a person might be very much ahead of their peers, although at the same time they are behind in other areas.

In my life, because of some of the emotional turmoil in my younger days, I feel more mature than some people (regardless of their age), but it's also stunted me in some areas and I am more immature in a few ways. I also tend to act silly and not necessarily how a nineteen-year-old is "supposed" to act. My appearance (lots of bright colors, no makeup, a 'cute' type face) also tends to give off the impression that I am younger than I really am. Since I don't do some "adult" things, like having a job or kids or a significant other, that also makes some people think that I am not an adult, but I have all the legal rights. It's quite unfair because I have 14-year-old friends who have done just as much (if not more) than I have to deserve those rights, but they still have to wait until they have attained the age of majority to be treated like worthwhile human beings who know what they want.

Besides, people always change, they always learn new things. At any age, people can still grow to new heights and learn new things that completely change their worldview and ascend to new heights of maturity.

Adulthood is another concept that few people question, but if you stop and think about, doesn't make a whole lot of sense and is quite flawed and in need of a complete overhaul.

It Had to Be You

jessica
What if it was you?
You that I needed all along?
I felt like a fool
Thinking we were completely wrong

It seemed like a dream
One beautiful screen
That echoed forever
And made us not afraid to feel a thing

And after it ends
We'll try to be friends
They say that what doesn't kill us makes us who we are

All this time and everything's changed but I still feel the same
All good things eventually end and get washed down the drain

What a disaster it would be if you discovered that I cared
A little too much for friends but not enough to share

Me, I'm never alone in the car...
I guess that's what happens when you're a teenager who can drive.
I always have at least one other person with me.
Unless I'm dropping them off I suppose.
I like being in the car, listening to music, just me and my brother in the backseat...

Writer's Block: Happy Halloween!

hand

Boo! How did you celebrate Halloween?

View 500 Answers

I went to my mother's house by the Blue Ridge Parkway the weekend before halloween and did autumn/halloween kinds of things: picked pumpkins and carved them into jack-o-lanterns, went for walks to look at the leaves, and ate too much candy. Theresa's boyfriend bought Tori and I new clothes, which was really excellant, since both of us had either worn out all our clothes, or they didn't fit anymore.

And then on official Halloween, I went to downtown Gatlinburg and walked around with my sister and brother and we hung out with our friends. I didn't really dress up, but Tori went as an American (who will shoot you for no good reason):

So smile, 'cause you'll go out in style.

So I just spent 6 days with my mother (something I never thought I would do on purpose) and it went fine, even nice. We never fought, we had good conversations...
She said "something about you is just so different now... you're calmer, and you just don't have that angst anymore" (okay that's paraphrased, but I don't remember it word-for-word) and maybe it's just because I'm older now... or that I spent all last summer thinking about what I did wrong... and I guess I sort of angsted myself out, but now I can get along with her... and I always used to say "I can get along with anyone, except my mother" and maybe all the anger and drama and hurt is all over with and I can move on and not be a normal person, but at least be a happy person. It sort of comes as a surprise when I realize... Everything has been going good for me... And that never happens, but now it definitely is.. I have options, I have choices... Something I didn't used to think I had.  And everything is just sort of falling into place... it's just really nice...

Take your Hatred out on Me.

You Never ever believed in Me.

I never wanted it to end like this.

You Can't save yourself

*above quotes from Marilyn Manson Songs*

"It's alright, I'm just a girl she said
talk down to me and take me to bed
I don't think I don't feel
and I don't really matter at all
Kiss me in darkness and turn out the light
pretend you're with someone else tonight
you don't think you don't feel
and I don't really understand why

I'm a person who speaks I'm a person who thinks
but you hope I'll forget as you ply me with drinks
and you cannot buy me and you cannot use me
but I know that you'll want to try...

It's alright, I'm just a girl she said
you can't buy me and take me to bed
because I think
because I feel
and you don't matter at all"

-Just a Girl by Dubstar (I just discovered them cuz one of my favorite bands did a cover of one of their songs...So this explains how i'm all of a sudden listening to '90s Brit-Pop)
